Kenny
If you’re going to make a film in Australia than it usually has to be something bizarre and quirky just to get noticed and I think this has got to be one of the most bizarre and quirky ideas we’ve had since The Cars That Ate Paris. Welcome ladies and gentlemen to the world of portable human waste disposal- Kenny’s world.
For those who haven’t seen any publicity yet Kenny is a mockumentary on the life of a port-a-loo dispensing agent named Kenny who is just trying to make his way in the thrilling world of waste disposal. Him and his intrepid band of waste managers (his ‘splashdown’ crew) go from event to event setting up and then carting off the ever-present, and highly underappreciated, temporary dunnies that populate all such gatherings. And they do a bloody good job to. After all, what would happen if the Melbourne Cup didn’t have enough port-a-loos? Fortunately though Kenny is there but, as necessary as his valuable service is, Kenny still struggles for respect from the general populace and it’s his search for dignity that underpins this truly original tale.
If we wanted a break out concept for a local comedy than this is it. Original, funny and with the ability to take the piss out of itself (yeah, I couldn’t resist) the story about a guy who takes poo seriously could indeed be the comedy of the year. Not to say that we need American style potty humour but the fact that they’ve made a comedy about toilets takes the phrase ‘toilet humour’ and lifts it into the almost dignified heights of ‘brilliant parody/satire’. And I’m serious about the ability to condescend itself. If there’s one theme that runs through nearly all successful Australian movies it’s a good sense of it’s place in the cinema food chain and for comedy that means knowing it will be shown next to big-budget American comedies and accordingly they refuse to take themselves seriously (think The Castle, The Dish, Crackerjack- even Strange Bedfellows, Australia’s last reasonably successful comedy). Well you can’t get less serious than this so it’s looking good.
There are some great interviews and reviews out there so check a few of the following out.
