This Weeks Box Office

A healthy little week in box office land as Jindabyne hangs in at fourth and Ten Canoes breaks the $2 million mark in at eleventh.
Top 20 Weekend Cinema Box Office Takings 27th - 30th July
Local Content Score- 2
It wasn’t a bad little weekend for local cinema takings but I’m sure producers would have been hoping for a bit more. On what was a reasonably quiet box office bracket Jindabyne managed to keep a place in the top five, even in the face of two new import debuts, and went on to make $634,031 for the weekend. It wasn’t spectacular but considering it beat out last weeks import debut My Super Ex-Girlfriend and had the best hold of the weekend at only -27% it was still a good effort. One thing that was healthy was the average earnings per screen which maintained its spot above $9,000. This is a really good average-haul for Jindabyne, only beaten by number one debut You, Me and Dupree, but it has to be as it suffers from a lack of screens at only 68 across the country. For a comparison You, Me and Dupree is screening on 247, over three times as many screens, with Pirates of the Caribbean on 441! But, that’s how the game works, every local film having to be the battler in it’s own epic story of ‘against the odds’. A bit like art imitating art.
With $1.8 million under its belt already it’s still difficult to work out where Jindabyne will end up. Its forerunner Lantana was one of the great box office success stories of the last decade, earning over $12 million, but that was a film that opened on very few cinema screens and generated a crescendo of word-of-mouth that forced cinemas across the country to screen it. With Jindabyne opening on a broader 64 screens last week the hype seems a bit muted. It’s very possible that with a debut of over 60 screens (big for recent local films) the film might not be able to generate hype because it’s screen count is already a decent size. That might seem a bit weird but hype relies on momentum, pushing on boundaries until seeing what the fuss is all about becomes a phenomenon in its own right. It’s the surprising and unexpected success of a film that generates things like newspaper articles commenting on its good form which then gets everyone curious enough to watch it themselves which in turn makes it more successful and adds to the snowball effect. After the achievements of Lantana everyone has waited for Jindabyne to do well straight away so the feature will no longer be able to rely on the notoriety of unexpected success which will dampen the surrounding hype. What this means for the film will not become clear until the next few weeks but it is very possible that it wont make anywhere near what Lantana did simply through this lack of hype. We’ll know in two weeks.
In at eleventh spot Ten Canoes was also doing okay, reaching a total haul of $2,017,777 but it did suffer its largest fall since opening with a decrease of 29%. Considering that was the second lowest fall behind Jindabyne you have to marvel at the holding power of this little film as well as that of local films in general. Unfortunately though Ten Canoes only managed to make $181,061 for the weekend which shows that its box office resting spot may be just about reached. All in all it has been a good run for a very unique and unusual film and with a good hold next week it could still break $2.5 million but unless it manages to replicate Rabbit Proof Fence’s mighty 44% resurgence it wont get much further.
So not a bad week with $815,092 being taken by local films and some very good holds by both films. Next week there’ll be at least two new local debuts with two comedies Footy Legends and Kenny being released making them the first local comedies for the year. It’s anyone’s guess how successful they’ll both be but with a lot of publicity being generated for Footy Legends through appearances on The Footy Show and a sizeable niche audience in the form of rugby league fans everywhere I’d say the feel good story of family and football will be the pick of the two. Should be interesting.
