This weeks Top 20 Cinema Box Office 29th June-2nd July

And here's the final type of weekly report that has a look how Aussie films did last weekend at the cinema. Painful I know but <mock determined surgeons voice> I refuse to give up on it!!!
Local Content Score- 2 from top 20
Report Card- Okay opening week by Ten Canoes as Candy holds on bravely to make it two Aussie movies in the top twenty.
While not a spectacular debut Ten Canoes has paddled its way into the top ten this week on the back of the exposure it has had from winning its Cannes Film award. It got a special mention at the world famous festival (that's what you get when they dont know what to give you but they still really want to give you something) and has been widely noted as the first movie written in an aboriginal language. If you were going to see it, don’t worry- there’s an English voice over to explain everything- but it’s still an impressive first for Australian cinema and worth noting.
As to how well it will perform at the cinema you shouldn’t be holding your breath as it’s not looking like the break out hit of the season. With $417,000 on debut it has managed a much better first week than Candy which pulled around $270,000 and has gone on to total a bit under $1.5 million but this has been with the ‘so hot right now’ Heath Ledger on board, and is a star quality lacking from Canoes. With the directorial team from Rabbit Proof Fence on board and similar subject matter Ten Canoes would be hoping to follow in its predecessors footsteps which saw an incredible 17 week run in the Top Twenty in 2002 on up to100 screens. It went on to make over $7 million but this is a figure Canoes can probably only dream about with its measly 30 cinema screens and much lower first week. Rabbit Proof debuted with $843,000 so unless there’s been a stack of people who just decided to wait and see the ten intrepid water craft next week it wont be reaching those same giddy heights. Realistically it will be hoping for a $2-3 million performance which would be quite a decent haul if it can get it.
Candy, the junkie movie by the before-mentioned Mr Ledger, has surprised by actually staying in The Twenty for another week. It’s nearing the end of its run and was gone for all money but is still there. It’s final resting place should be just shy of $1.5 million which, considering Ledgers involvement, would be a bit disappointing however the subject of the movie wouldn’t have helped. I don’t know too many people enthralled by the depressing-junkie-drama genre myself but that could just be a reflection on the company I keep.
So an okay debut to offset another quiet week in Aussie movie box office land. Having two locals in The Twenty has been good but the industry is going to need a decent hit. Hopefully with Jindabyne on the horizon (follow up to the very successful Lantana of 2001 which made $12 million) that time is not far off. Bring on July 20th.
