This weeks Top Twenty Albums

July 18th 2006 01:14
Excuse the dodgy grammar this week- I’m kinda in a hurry- but it was a shocking week for locals as import debuts regain the top two positions and only three locals manage to stay in the top twenty.

ARIA Album Chart Report- 17th July
Local Content Score- 3 of top 20

After a very good run for local talent on the top twenty album charts there’s been a bit of a derailment this week as the local content ticker crashes to three. The damage came mainly from import debuts that took three of the top five positions and forced a few locals outside the twenty including The Veronicas who are now in the unfamiliar ‘lower than twenty’ territory for the first time. Other albums out of the twenty include The Butterfly Effects Imago and The Sleepy Jackson’s Personality which took a horrific dive into the deep, falling twenty three positions to number thirty three. Although they were always going to descend I didn’t figure it would be at speed.

Eskimo Joe
Eskimo Joe is going the distance.

It’s not all bad news though as Eskimo Joe now have a distinguished and well deserved ‘
’ next to their name. Third position is good and so is platinum. With only five weeks on the chart and 70,000 happy listeners this has to be The Eskimos best effort so far and is pay off for all the hard work an Aussie band has to go through to taste success. From here there’s only up so the next challenge is double platinum which is well achievable, especially considering they’d be number one this week if it weren’t for the debuts of Muse and Thom Yorke. With the steam coming off the imports next week and normal play resuming post-debut the Fremantle boys could be back on top which would prove their durability and put that double
well within reach.

Beyond the top five the only other two locals in the twenty were Something for Kate in at seven and the seemingly ever present Rogue Traders in behind them at eighth. Considering they were number one last week seventh position for Something for Kate might be considered a bit low however it’s doubtful they’ll be getting the kind of exposure Eskimo Joe have and will drop off quicker. Having said that though they should be around for a while yet. One place they could go for tips on staying power is The Rogue Traders. It seems The Rogues have a healthy disrespect for album chart gravity, not only staying in the top twenty for thirty eight weeks but refusing to leave the top ten and have repeated the dastardly deed again this week. Respect.
Evermore- not quite honorary Australians

Finally, a special mention needs to be made regarding Evermore’s debut at five. If you like you could say there’s 3.5 locals in the top twenty as Evermore are, technically, Kiwis. If there was an Australian bill of rights the fourth or fifth right would be the right to claim anything Kiwi as our own, especially if they live here (which means we pretty much claim everything) so we could say that they’re Australians newly arrived on the mainland from our eighth state and/or territory but I’ve resisted the urge. We’ve got to leave them something (beyond the All Blacks, netball, basketball.....)

So not a very good week for Aussie bands. Here’s hoping next week is a bit more friendly.
