Ten Canoes has another big week as it prepares to become the second most successful Australian movie of 2006.

As the only local product on show in this weeks top twenty box office takers it was all up to Ten Canoes to represent and represent it did. Ten Canoes didn’t just hold its box office it improved on it by hauling in $304,515 for the week. Sure, the hold was only 1% better but still, that’s pretty impressive.
With the films impressive holds it will now go on to pass Candy on this years local box office chart and comfortably glide into second position behind Kokoda which is still the highest grossing local movie this year on $3,093,757. Whether it can beat Kokoda is up in the air. With the holds it is maintaining Canoes is starting to resemble Rabbit Proof Fence (same production team as Canoes) with its very long yet understated box office performance and were it to last another eight weeks it very well could pass Kokoda’s total haul but with only 34 screens it would be a challenge. What it needs to do is capitalise on the publicity from the new Australian movies being released over the next fortnight. If it can do that then it could go on to make $2.5 million but only time will tell.
Along with Canoes solid hold and seventh place there were two other significant figures quietly reached this week. The first is a personal achievement for Canoes which is now guaranteed to receive box office takings in excess of the funding they received from the FFC to make the film. Although movies these days are co-funded (with private investment companies responsible for about 50-60% of film production money) exceeding the FFC grant is a good sign that the film will eventually make its money back, even turning a profit for its investors. Too many local films lately have been commercial failures with huge losses and private companies are beginning to baulk at investing in them, seeing their high expense and often negative returns as a bad place to put their money. If they stop funding films the industry is screwed. With an FFC grant of $1,440,000 Ten Canoes should make enough to surpass its costs, pay its investors and the FFC (who can then reuse the money on other films) and perhaps become a member of a sadly exclusive club- Australian movies that have made a decent profit.
The second significant figure this week was the collective industry making the $6 million mark for total box office takings. This sees 2006 pass the horrific 1989/1990 box office takings where neither made it higher than $5.9 million. It’s not something to be proud of but 2006 wont be the worst box office year of the past two decades. The industry can breathe a little bit easier...
From that morbid note we can get positive. Jindabyne gets released next week!!! Who knows how well it’ll go but there are high hopes that it could become the hit of the year. That in itself could get a little depressing if you thought about it too much but from the few glimpses I’ve seen of it on telly it’s looking like a professional little show. It actually looks like a real cinematic movie! Throw in a few names like ‘Mrs Hugh Jackman’ and a track record that reads ‘First movie Bliss, second movie Lantana’ and the industry has something to get excited about. Bring on next week.
