This Weeks Top Twenty Movies

It's very late. I blame Uni.
Jindabyne keeps doing well but things get drastic for Footy Legends.
Top 20 Weekend Cinema Box Office Takings 10th - 13th August
Local Content Score- 4
As if three local films weren’t good enough last week we’ve now got four in the Top Twenty with mockumentary comedy Kenny getting some preview screenings in to help the overall local haul get $692,311 for the bracket.
Happily it was Jindabyne again leading the way this week in sixth position with yet another good, solid take of $397,867 to make it the most successful local film of 2006, passing Kokoda’s $3,093,757 from April/May. With yet another low drop off of only 27% and a healthy average of $4,912 Jindabyne should be well on it’s way to $4.5 million.
In at tenth was Ten Canoes with a fall of 22% to make $116,672 for the weekend. This movie really has become a bit of a trooper, carefully working its way past the $2.5 million mark. At the moment, with a total of $2,433,980, it looks like it could end up coming to rest a bit above last years surprise success Look Both Ways which ended up making $2.67 million.
At twelfth was Footy Legends which is turning out to be the real disappointment of the year. I’m at a loss to explain the failure of this movie which should, by rights, be making at least twice what it is but with only $106,286 from the weekend, a 46% drop on what was already an abysmal debut, this film could actually struggle to make $600,000! The biggest question for the film’s marketers has to be how they could have missed tapping into the ready made demographic of rugby league fans, especially after they managed to get TV spots on the rugby league Footy Show. Apparently that wasn’t enough. It will take a miracle for Legends to recover from here, (Something along the lines of a Queensland State of Origin come-from-behind win) leaving local film comedy writers everywhere fearing for their livelihood.
Finally, in at sixteenth was Kenny with a preview week total of $71,486. If there’s anyone that’s got to be worried about the performance of Footy Legends it would have to be the backers of Kenny who may be regretting their involvement with Australian comedy right about now. Fortunately though Kenny’s premise should have a much broader appeal than the sport focused Legends and it could end up being a very decent little battler story if it can get enough people interested. How they’re going to get people’s attention will be the big question and we’ll only find out how successful they’ve been next week.
Speaking of next week there could be even more than four local films on at the same time with at least one, 2:47, a definite. 2:47's debut will be very interesting as it’s a teen flick about suicide which sees both its genre and it’s topic treading some rarely traveled territory for local films. To be honest I cant see it doing that well. Not only does it tap into one of the exasperatingly unpopular themes Australians dont go to see (Why do Australian film makers insist on making this stupid drug junkie-esque, artsie-fartsie, ‘the world is a terrible place’ rubbish? Are they trying to make unpopular films? It’s called escapism people!!! It’s what we go to the movies for!) but it’s a teen flick rated R that doesn’t involve zombies, screaming backpackers or endless American toilet humour. Hopefully it can surprise.

Such a bizarre concept for a movie but those are the ones that usually work in Australia
