This Weeks Top Twenty Movies

August 22nd 2006 23:45
There was a massive five Australian movies in the Top Twenty this week as Kenny takes up the baton as the highest earning local.

Top 20 Weekend Cinema Box Office Takings 17th - 20th August
Local Content Score- 5

Wow, big week in local box office land. It doesn’t happen very often so enjoy it while it lasts people- five locals in the Top Twenty.

And now for some classy toilet humour.

Is it a poor reflection on our local industry that the top earning movie of a huge five movie week is a film about toilets? Regardless Kenny is the top local in at seventh with a take of $364,099 from 77 cinema screens giving it a very healthy $4,729 per screen. If there’s one thing the last few weeks has shown it’s that well performing local films really turn a nice bit of coin for the cinemas that screen them with Ten Canoes and Jindabyne both topping the screen average counts for their first few weeks. Kenny has picked up where it’s predecessors left off with its good average and, although not earth shattering, the $350,000 haul puts it beyond the terror result of Footy Legends. From here it’s down to word-of-mouth so we wont know how consistent Kenny will be till next week but things are looking okay.

In at ninth was Jindabyne with a still respectable fall of 20%. This movie has really got some legs as it continues to draw in nice packets of money each week and should get at least $4.5 million with ease. I suppose the big question is what did Lantana have that Jindabyne doesn’t? Lantana had a decent opening of $430,696 back in 2001 but went on to make over $12 million, making it the eleventh highest grossing movie in Australia’s history. So why was it so successful? If Aussie movie makers can answer that question then they may just solve the box office problem in this country. Until then Jindabyne is sitting pretty on $3,677,467 after getting $320,646 for the weekend.

One of those dramas hoping to crack the Lantana Code is 2:37 which debuted this week at twelfth with an understated $132,605. The problem with this movie is that it’s a movie about teens with a R18 rating that prevents most teens from actually seeing it. But somehow I don’t think too many teenagers would want to see this film. 2:37 has a pretty grim subject matter, dealing with a suicide that occurs at 2:37pm during highschool hours, and not the sort of popcorn flick that usually attracts the big crowds seeking a bit of fun escapism. I’ll be surprised if this one breaks through $1.2 million.

Ten Canoes is slowly winding up, this week making $93,090 to reach $2,587,388 and fifteenth on the Top Twenty. It really has been an awesome run for this little movie and I reckon Rolph’s run of profit making movies has just reached two. I don’t think any other Aussie film maker can claim that at the moment.

Finally, in twentieth, we have Footy Legends which is looking very sick as it staggers to $504,104 after a $49,361 weekend. Having seen this movie I can see why this one has crashed so hard but it’s still a disappointment. Footy Legends is the kind of movie that should succeed in Australia and a haul of less than $1.5 million is a tragedy that gets repeated way too often. Interestingly Legends will end up with a haul very similar to another football movie, Australian Rules, which may suggest we prefer our sport real and our movies fake, but it’s not an excuse to make less money than You and Your Stupid Mate.

As the dust clears on another box office weekend the tally for locals has ended up at $959,801, up 28% on last week, which makes the total haul so far for 2006 about $11,904,131.

It seems like such a lottery for Aussie film makers. Their films never cost too much to make (do you know how much Kenny cost?) and they can make back anything from squat to 12 million or more. Must be quite stress-inducing being an Aussie film producer.

Kenny is weird in that it was funded by a company, Splashdown, the company Kenny works for in the movie (it's actually a real business). Figures like this are always dodgy but I've heard that Splashdown contributed $500,000 and I cant find any government help so I'm guessing $500,000 was the cost.

If $500,000 is true then Kenny could be genius from a financial point of view. The cinemas usually take half of box office receipts, then marketing costs are put on top of that, but even then Kenny should blitz that figure (especially when you include DVD sales).

The Castle only cost something like $800,000 and it went on to become one of the most successful films of the last decade...
