This weeks Top Twenty Music Albums
July 11th 2006 01:35
To kick off the second week of reports we have the music charts top twenty where two new Aussie debuts have made a splash with Something for Kate’s Desert Lights finally knocking Eskimo Joe from the number one position and The Sleepy Jacksons latest coming in at number 10.

Wow, big week of results at the top end of town with Something for Kate’s debut being a big one. Eskimo Joe has been comfortably seated upon the top of the mountain for the last three weeks running but if you wanted anyone to knock them back to second it would be another local and that’s what Something for Kate have done. Not only that but they’ve also gone straight to gold status, meaning they’ve already sold over 35,000 units. That’s pretty good for a first week and impressive considering some of the other recent releases they beat to get there.
As for Eskimo Joe there’s still some life there yet as they only drop to second place which doesn’t take the shine off their stellar performance at all. Didn’t want to see them out of the top spot but like mentioned before, if they were going to go it’s good they were replaced by another local. With their second place held it makes it two local bands on top of the list this week which is an awesome effort and shows that the industry is very healthy.
Behind Eskimo Joe were The Rogue Traders in seventh who, after thirty seven weeks in the top twenty, have improved their position by three. With Pete Murray bowing out of the top twenty this week after forty one weeks it looks like The Traders are trying to go for at least forty two which they could easily surpass.
The other local debut was in at number ten with The Sleepy Jackson’s Personality- One was a spider one was a bird album. Crazy name, good debut and they should do well although it’s unlikely they’ll get the headlines the way Something for Kate will.
The Butterfly Effect’s Imago is in thirteenth, down from fifth and that will probably be a trend that will continue as it’s unlikely they’ll reverse the slide. Hopefully they can hang in there for a few weeks yet.
Finally there’s The Veronicas in at number seventeen as they gradually get closer to the bottom of the pile. They’re up there with The Rogue Traders as far as a long run in the top twenty is concerned with thirty eight weeks under their belt so they’ve done an awesome job and they’ll be finishing their run on three platinums. Not shabby at all.
So a good set of local debuts to make it six in all in the top twenty. With some more new releases on the horizon (yeah, I got the release date for Youth Groups latest wrong last week) there’s the possibility that it could get even higher.
In the meantime, if you’d like to view the whole chart head over to the ARIA website.
