Top 20 Music Albums Report- 3rd June
July 6th 2006 00:47
Local Content Score- 6 of top 20
Report Card- The Eskimos continue their run at the top while some longer term residents refuse to leave.
Wow, haven’t the boys from Fremantle been doing well. On what must be a considerable stream of Emos exchanging their cash for goods and services the Eskimos have made it three weeks in a row at number one, beating out Chris Isaak, The Chilli Peppers and Fatboy Slim to make the top spot their own. At this rate they’re up for at least one shiny, platinum wall hanger and it cant be far off either. The good run probably shouldn’t surprise as it’s being played to death on radio at the moment but all the same, good on ‘em and go you good things. Let’s hope they’re up there for a fair while yet.
The Butterfly Effect fell from 2nd to 5th this week with their latest Imago. Don’t think I’ve heard anything from this one yet so it’ll be interesting to see how it does.
Behind them we (still) have The Rogue Traders at 10th and The Veronicas at 13th and Pete Murray back in The Twenty with a vengeance at 18. The sixth local in The Twenty is Wolfmother at 20th with Bernard Fanning just missing out at 21. The run of these albums has been impressive, each one establishing themselves on the chart over 35 weeks ago! That’s before Christmas!!! With most punching on towards their 4th platinum it really has been an outstanding effort. One of the strongest Australian cultural industries has always been music where we have consistently seen unique and creative artists be successful. Any era of recent Aussie history has its own local music to be proud of and today is no exception with our musicians still taking it to the world and making us feel mighty chuffed about ourselves. The latest are of course the Brisvegan girls that make up The Veronicas but no doubt there’ll be many more. People worry about Aussie culture being swamped by American stuff but the success of the music industry is a good argument against the pessimism.
Unfortunately though the very long runs in the Top Twenty also suggest that if you want to hear the good stuff you have to wait for the Christmas stocking-stuffer season. This is when the big-gun music companies release their well groomed talent to the public to maximise sales which, although a good thing for exposure, can leave you hanging.
Fortunately though there is some new stuff on the horizon with Youth Group apparently about to release their album (which will no doubt please the same crowd buying Eskimo Joes latest) and the Young Divas single still doing well (I didn’t say I’d like it, just that it will do well) so expect some more new stuff to get in there and mix it with the imports some time soon.
In the meantime, if you’d like to view the whole chart head over to the ARIA website.
The picture used is apparently too old to get me in trouble for using it. You can find it at this wiki site .
