Top 20 Metro TV Ratings 25th June- 1st July

Second TV report and if you've noticed I've finally got a piccie (yay!). Copyright land still scares me though so please bail me up if I haven't got it worked out.
Local Content Score- 13 of top 20
Report card- Some surprising results this week as SBS takes the top spot and imports start getting back into full swing.
And the winner is… SBS!!! Pity about the result (The game’s score I mean) but The Other Public Broadcaster will be smiling for a long while yet as they bask in the glow of Socceroo mania and the inevitable advertising goodies it will bring. Unfortunately the Socceroos were beaten and with it SBS’s hopes of non-stop rating winners right up to the final but it’s been enough with a good result. The worst part about this for SBS is that the rights to all soccer games- including internationals apparently- have been sold to Foxtel so SBS wont be able to televise the A League or other following tournaments for something like seven years (there’ll be no free to air coverage at all) but no doubt their reporting on all things soccer will continue unabated.
As for the actual ratings of the Italy game the most interesting part is that they rated lower in every city except Sydney where a huge turn out from the Italian community made up for the fewer viewers everywhere else. Extraordinary result but it takes a team effort to beat Border Security at the moment and that’s what they did with 2.297 million viewers beating out Border Security’s 2.163 million.
As usual Border Security’s partner in crime at Channel 7 Medical Emergency was happily following the leader but behind was where the carnage was happening. Over the last few weeks local content has been going gangbusters with a high of 17 local productions filling out the Top Twenty just two weeks ago. To find an import you had to look outside the five, at one stage seven, top rating TV shows, an impressive effort by the local industry even if it was off the back of Australia vs Japan and the second State of Origin game. Things do appear to be returning to normal however as last weeks re-appearance of the big American dramas has turned into a medium scale onslaught. They haven’t completely dominated but with at least one CSI back and a new comedy actually worth watching (My Name is Earl) there’s now some heavy competition for the eyeballs of Australians.
This competition saw the Local Content Score dropped back to 13 local shows in the Top Twenty, only 8 of which were not news and current affairs shows with only 4 of those 8 not being some form of reality TV. The most noteworthy of these has been the repeats of 9’s 20 to 1. The success of the repeats of this program goes to show how much we love our wacky history and I have to say I’m pretty chuffed about that. After all, audiences cant be tuning in for the host, Bert, looking oh-so-scarily plastic with his cringe inducing jokes but it works for Dancing with the Stars and Daryl Somers so maybe TV execs have stumbled on some perverse production formula where plastic, cringe-inducing personality on wacky TV show = ratings gold. Who knows but we’re all to blame I s’pose.
Next week there’s a few new shows debuting (all imports I think) but nothing that should end up in The Twenty, at least not in the long term. The big results will be the third State of Origin which was decided in a screamer down in Melbourne (Queenslander!!!) and the absence of SBS. The Origin usually rates about 1.7 million viewers but as the game was played in Melbourne it was shown live in Victoria (and I think Adelaide) for the first time in at least a decade. The first Origin game was on a two hour delay in Melbourne and rated decently but the second saw it pushed back past 11pm and saw the coverage drop something like 150,000 viewers. With it being screened live in prime time it would be hoping for at least 1.8 million but with it being a decider it should be able to break 1.9. If it were to bust through the big 2 million mark that would be something indeed.
And of course SBS, with no Socceroos, shouldn’t be in the Twenty till the World Cup final and even then there’s doubt whether the Italy v France match will draw the crowds in the middle of the night. There was a massive turnout in Sydney however……
