Two Twisted
This blog was started with a couple of aims, one of those aims being the promotion of Australian culture, and it’s about time some promotion started happening.
[Edit Note: I've been getting a lot of hits from people wanting to find out what the links have been in the Two Twisted episodes. The best place for the answer is over at the Two Twisted Wiki site or the official Two Twisted site if you just want clues.]
Tonight sees the debut of what could be the biggest thing to happen in Australian drama this decade with the screening of Bryan Brown’s Two Twisted on Channel 9 at 9:30pm. Two Twisted is a refreshingly new seven week drama series featuring a truly staggering amount of local acting talent brought together for fourteen individual stories, many of which revolve around dark horror, thriller and supernatural themes. The casting list really has to be seen to be believed and, with each story having a unique director and writer, the individual episodes should act like short films for the drama enthusiasts viewing pleasure.
How did such a massive project come together? Who knows but you can bet a good slab of the farm that the blame can be rightfully left at the feet of Mr Brown who, if all goes well with this little project, could soon be considered the godfather of Australian TV drama. Who else could bring together names like Sam Neill, Bill Hunter, Vince Colosimo, Melissa George, Garry McDonald, Alex Dimitriades and Wendy Hughes? Very few people, that’s the answer.
Some credit also has to go to Channel 9 who apparently went to Brown with the idea to initiate things but it’s not the first time something like this has been done. Two Twisted is actually the sequel to the earlier Twisted Tales of 1996 which was very successful and gave decent exposure to such directors as Gregor Jordan (Two Hands, Ned Kelly) and David Caesar (Mullet, Dirty Deeds) as well as some decent overseas sales just to sweeten the deal. The latest incarnation will no doubt be hoping to follow closely in its predecessors footsteps and, fortunately, seems to be well on the way as it already has its first international sale in the bank. (Absurdly it’s to Hallmark International, a company I always relate to soppy American family movies and even cornier birthday cards. Do they have a thriller genre-channel as well?)
All in all it should be well watchable TV produced by some of our best and a good reason to wait up on a Monday night. If you want to learn more, head over to Channel 9's okay-ish blurb site or checkout this decent interview article from the news.com.au network.
Two Twisted Monday nights on Channel 9 @ 9:30pm.
